EIA: US utility-scale PV installations to reach 29.1GW in 2023 2023-02-16
Recently, according to research data released by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), the US PV market will add 29.1GW of utility-scale PV systems and 9.4GW of energy storage systems by 2023.

In the latest annual generator monthly update (EIA-860M) from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), the US PV market is expected to rebound this year after a number of utility-scale PV projects were delayed in 2022 due to trade issues with the so-called U.S. Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA).The EIA said that if all of these projects were able to come online as planned If all these projects come online as planned, 2023 will be more than double the 13.4GW of new utility-scale PV system capacity installed in the US in 2021.

Installed utility-scale PV capacity in the US has grown rapidly since 2010. Despite an upward trend over the past decade, installed utility-scale PV capacity declines by 23% in 2022 compared to 2021, a decline that is the result of UFLPA trade issues as well as broader supply chain disruptions and other challenges associated with the new crown epidemic.

EIA researchers forecast that by 2023, Texas (7.7GW) and California (4.2GW) will have installed 41% of the new installed PV system capacity in the US.

The US energy storage market has grown rapidly over the past few years and the market is now eligible for a 30% investment tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act guidelines. According to estimates from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), the installed capacity of battery storage systems in the US could more than double by 2023, with storage system developers planning to install an additional 9.4GW of battery storage systems on top of the existing 8.8GW of battery storage systems.

The US battery storage market is growing rapidly with the development of the utility PV market and wind power market. And battery storage systems can store excess electricity generated for later use according to the intermittent patterns of wind power facilities and photovoltaic systems. The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that 71% of the energy storage systems installed in the US in 2023 will come from California and Texas, two states with abundant solar and wind resources. Arizona Public Service Company and Florida Power & Light Company are the two largest offtakers of energy storage systems in the coming year, with each battery storage project installed ranging from 16MW to 50MW of installed capacity; while AES Corporation and Hawaiian Electric Company are purchasing 30MW and 36MW of battery storage systems respectively.
