Skyscrapers dominate city skylines, but according to an analysis by researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), these massive glass-walled structures could be made more energy efficient by adding thermally efficient photovoltaic (PV) windows.

Buildings consume more than a third of the world's energy and almost a third of global carbon dioxide emissions. But by combining photovoltaics with high-thermal-performance window technology, new buildings could be a key tool in the fight against climate change, the researchers note. Modern office buildings are notable for their looming glass facades, a stark contrast to the days when they were built with concrete and single-pane windows. The Equitable building in New York, for example, has a 25 percent window-to-wall ratio. By comparison, the city's Bank of America building, which opened 101 years later in 2016, has a ratio of 71 percent.
